The solution leveraged deep learning–based object detection techniques to identify structured visual elements such as lighting fixtures, electrical symbols, annotations, and other standardized diagram components.

The system transformed complex, unstructured visual documents into structured, machine-readable data, enabling downstream workflows including automated analysis, indexing, and design validation. Particular focus was placed on handling noisy inputs, varying diagram styles, and inconsistencies common in real-world architectural drawings.

This project combined computer vision, dataset curation, and model optimization to bridge the gap between static design artifacts and computational understanding.

Architectural diagrams and floor plans contain dense, highly structured visual information, but extracting that information manually is slow and error-prone. The key challenges included:

  • Complex and unstructured visual layouts across different diagram styles

  • Variability in symbols, annotations, and drawing standards

  • Noisy or low-quality scanned documents

  • Difficulty in converting visual elements into structured, machine-readable data

  • Heavy reliance on manual interpretation by experts

The goal was to build a system capable of accurately understanding and extracting meaningful data from these diagrams at scale.

We designed a hybrid AI system combining computer vision with fine-tuned language models.

Key approach elements:

  • Training deep learning models for object detection on architectural symbols

  • Fine-tuning Large Language Models to interpret and structure extracted data

  • Curating and annotating a domain-specific dataset of diagrams and symbols

  • Handling variations in layout, noise, and symbol representation
